I put my clock out in the back garden in the sunshine when I got home from school. It also records the temperature as well. It didn't take long before it reached 120 degrees F, or 49.2 degrees C. I moved it to the shade and it is registering 98 degrees F at 4.42pm. What a scorcher!

This is the weather chart in my little classroom set for today. I think the heavens burst as the children were just getting to school. They were all absolutely drenched and we had to change them into PE kit until their uniforms were dry.

I received this lovely wool in the post today. As you can see it came in a skein and so I had to get my old wool winder out of storage. This winder dates from the 1940's and is still stored in it's original box, with the instruction sheet.

I went for my check-up at the dentist this afternoon and had a nasty shock. I need two fillings and a crown. The dentist gave me this new form called a Personal Dental Treatment Plan which tells me exactly what I'm going to have done, and how much it's all going to cost.

My sister got married today. She told me yesterday! She's been with her partner for 18 years and has always said that when she got married she would just go off and do it without any fuss, and that is what she did. She phoned me yesterday to invite me but it was too late for me to get off work for the ceremony, but I went round to her house and she had a lovely garden party with all her friends and neighbours this evening. That was only decided on yesterday too. She made her little bouquet from roses bought in M&S.

The socks are finished. I used a wool and bamboo mixture for these socks which should make them cool and hardwearing. The pattern is called Lacy Ribs. I managed to get the stripes matching as well, which I am really pleased aboiut.

A few years ago my Dad did away with a few flower beds and borders in his garden to make it easier to mow the grass. Sarah, my daughter, was just moving into her house and took this rose and planted it. it was always one of Mum's favourites. It is now thriving and is lovely to think that this rose will survive for a few more years.

My daughter, Sarah, and I went to visit Cranbury Park today as it was open for the National Gardens Open Days. It is just down the road from us but I have never seen it as the grounds are only open one day a year. It hasn't got much planting, but is the most wonderful parkland imaginable. Such beautiful trees. This sun dial was designed and placed here by Sir Isaac Newton in 1720, when he lived here with his niece for the seven years before his death.

No, it's not my birthday, and this isn't mine. This week is Chocolate Week in school, when all the lessons are focused around chocolate. This was the amount of chocolate that greeted me in the class I took today. Some amazing work was produced, and all for the lure of a little cube of chocolate.

This Campanula Carpatica was given to me by my sister over 20 years ago. It used to be all along the low wall in my garden, but when I had my garden redesigned a few years ago, it was all pulled out. Luckily, some of it survived and it is re-establishing itself again. My sister now wants some of it back for her new garden.

The Cordyline tree in my garden is out in flower. My husband brought this home from work about 15 years ago. It was in a little pot and I thought it would make an ideal structural patio plant. It kept growing so a couple of years later we planted it in the corner of the garden. It came up to about the middle rung of the fence then. It's now about 20 feet tall. The first time it flowered, about 7 years ago, it only had one flower, sticking out the top like a white Xmas tree. this year it has 12 flowers.

I went to my crop today, unloaded the car and then decided to move it away from the Lime trees, as I didn't want their sticky sap all over my lovely clean car. Car wouldn't start!!!!! A very nice man from the AA told me I needed a new battery, but he didn't have one and couldn't get any until Monday as the suppliers were closed for the weekend. Luckily, I scrap with a girl whose father-in-law owns an auto spares company, so she phoned her husband to pick a battery up for me and got me back on the road.

My eldest brother has been fishing and dropped off this Rainbow Trout for my tea. The fish doesn't look very happy, but I was. I baked it whole, in the oven for 35 mins with herbs and lemon and it tasted delicious. There's plenty left over to go with some salad for tomorrow.

Finished my third pair of socks today. The yarn for this pair is a mixture of wool and bamboo which is wonderfully soft. I knitted them from the toe up with a short row toe and heel in a 3x1 rib and a tubular bind-off .

Spring Bank Holiday Monday. Harry and Sophie came over for the day today, so as the weather was so kind we had a picnic lunch in the garden. The little dolly that Sophie is holding cost me 50p in a charity shop on Saturday. It never left her side all day. It shared her lunch, played with the Mega blocks and even had to have suncream on. One good buy!

I went to Calais for the day with Dad. Every year his Regimental Association (King's R oyal Rifle Corps) hold a Service of Remembrance at the Green Jackets Calais War memorial to remember the Defence of Calais in May 1940, when his regiment were ordered to remain in Calais and hold it whilst the main body of the B.E.F. retreated to Dunkirque. By their refusal to surrender, they contained a large number of the enemy and enabled the Dunkirque perimeter to be established.

The bulk of the regiment were eventually captured and spent the rest of the war as POWs in Poland working down the coal mines.

The lilies have started to come out in my garden, but they are well and truly chewed by those darn critters that I so lovingly dispose of each day. My neighbour grew the plants from seed a few years ago and gave me a couple. Unfortunately, he lost all of his this winter, and so did another neighbour, but I've managed to keep mine.

I've just finished knitting my second pair of socks. The wonderful thing about knitting socks is, that once you finish knitting there is no sewing up, only a tail of yarn to darn in and they are ready for wear. These ones are made with a cotton/wool/nylon mix so should be cool for the summer. Knitted from the toe up on five needles with a seamless toe and a short row heel.

This cheeky snail tried to escape my daily collection off of my lilies, but he was not quick enough for me and he went over the back fence with his pals. I'm thinking of marking them with a spot of nail varnish to see if any of them have visited before!

I planted this ornamental grass a couple of years ago when it was just a few strands in a little pot. It's now gradually taking over my little border. I dug half of it out in the autumn, but it's grown back with vigour. I has lovely long seeded stems later on in the year that rustle in the breeze.

This week I have been going over to my daughter's every day to feed her cat whilst she is away. The gardens in Chandler's Ford are a riot of colour at the moment, due to the very acid soil making it ideal for azaleas and rhodendendrons. This is one of the gardens I have been passing. I only live a mile away, but the soil here is completely different and there are no such colours on my estate.

Today my firstborn would have been 36 years old. Christopher died at 11weeks old, officially recorded as a 'cot-death', whatever that is. Not a day has gone by since that I have not thought about him.

Went over to Dad's this afternoon and found him sat on a seat behind his house chatting to a neighbour. The neighbour has lost his speech, but Dad just chats away regardless. He's wonderful! I sat on the bench in the glorious sunshine admiring the view and realised that this telephone pole was immediately in front of us. I love the pattern the radiating wires make against the sky, feeding all the houses in the close.

I had a foul day at work today, was dead on my feet, and so needed some comfort food. Nothing better than rice pudding! I heated it up, stirred in a large spoonful of jam and sat down to enjoy. I wondered why it tasted a bit oniony, until I looked at the jar of 'jam'. It was tomato and onion chutney!!!! I went to bed at seven o'clock!

I wanted to go to the bluebell woods in Bishopstoke for a 'photo shoot' this morning because I was teaching near there this afternoon, but Dad had a 'funny turn' yesterday and I insisted he see a doctor, so I took him to the surgery this morning instead. My photo for today would have been of the lovely bluebells so this is one I took on Monday of Harry in the woods in Petersfield.

I've finished the socks I was knitting. They fit really well and are lovely and comfortable. I've joined the Ravelry knitting forum and have read so many tips and new knitting ideas about casting on and finishing off and patterning. These socks were knitted from the cuff down but after reading up about socks I'm keen to knit some from the toe up and to use a different heel and toe arrangement and a 'magic' casting on method. I think I'll still stick to a plainish pattern for now until I get a bit more confident with the shaping.

I've spent a super day today with my daughters and their menfolk, and my grandchildren. After a superb roast beef lunch cooked by Alex we went to the school where he works to see the flock of Jacob sheep and the new lambs. These ones were only one and two days old. Harry collected eggs in the hen house to take home for his breakfast tomorrow and we had a lovely ramble through the bluebell woods. Unfortunately, Sophie fell asleep after the lambs so not many photos of her. It was very difficult to decide which photo to choose out of the 200 I took, but I think these lambs have won.

To celebrate National Scrapbooking Day we had a Lucky Dip at my crop today. I had eyed up all the goodies on offer and really wanted this felt bag kit. However, my name just wasn't called out and I was sure that it would go before it was my turn to choose, but I was in luck. My name was the very last one and no one else had chosen it. Made up, it will do very nicely for my knitting. Thanks a lot, Nicki!

The rain clouds are gathering. I had to turn the light on at 4 o'clock this afternoon because it got so dark. Within five minutes of taking this picture it was pouring with rain. I've been lurking in the back bedroom off and on today today trying to catch sight of the blackbirds that are nesting in my palm tree but they are too quick for me.

I'm off to Scrappper's Paradise for the weekend and am packing these two books. I've almost finished the Kate Atkinson one and can't wait to read the last few chapters. It's been a jolly good read, full of wry humour and subtle characterisation. Crime fiction at it's best. The other book will be a bit more sober as it's about a Jew in hiding during the Holocaust, as recommended by Debs.

St. Georges Day and I thought I would take a photo of the English flag flying , but I haven't seen any!
It's also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare in 1616, arguably England's greatest playwright. He is suppposed to have died on his birthday, but his birth was never recorded. However, he was baptised on 26th April, 1564 and babies were usually baptised three days after birth, so it's nice to think that it was his birthday as well. This plaque is on the wall of the school I work at.

I've been thinking of doing a couple of canvases for my walls, but thought I ought to try it out on paper first. I've used an old photo of adorable Harry on this so shall get a more up-to-date one taken for the real thing. I'm glad I did a trial run first as I found out all the difficulties and can put them right next time. The other canvas will be of the adorable Sophie.

Part of my spring-cleaning routine involves sorting and tidying, and so I have sorted out my albums and magazines, and finally, have them in some sort of order, all labelled so that I know what is in them. They all now fit neatly on the top of my computer unit.

The lilac tree is just coming into bloom in Dad's garden. It started life in our old house and was moved, as a twig, to its present site over 40 years ago. It used to be a bush, but is now a tree. Dad regularly hacks bits off of it that get in his way, but it is very forgiving and blooms every year.

I went to Winchester again today for another wander around. I parked in my favourite spot down near The Meadows (2hours free parking), which means you have to walk a lttle way to get into the city, but on a day like today was no hardship. I walked up through The Weirs and took this photo of the old battlements of Wolvesey Castle which date back to 1100AD.

Cowslips must be my most favourite wild flower. When I was a child we used to go for long springtime walks over fields (now housing estates) and find these nestling in the grass. I've always loved their sturdy stems and the hanging heads. Near where I live now there is a whole bank of them and I look forward to seeing them each year. I stoppped my car in the lay-by and climbed up the bank to get this photo.

After two days of inactivity I woke up this morning feeling a lot better, but very stiff, so decided to go out and enjoy the sunshine and loosen up a bit. I went into Winchester with my camera to get some shots of Canon Street for my Winchester album. Spring means spring-cleaning. When I was a child my mum used to lift all the carpets and rugs and take them outside, hang them over the line and give them a jolly good beating. Then they would be placed face down on the dewy grass and dragged over the lawn, turned over and left to dry. I just get a man with a machine to clean mine. Much easier!

It wasn't until I started reading this book last night that I realised I had read it before. I don't usually read a book twice as I always think that there are loads of books that I will never have the time to read and I want to read as many as I can, but this is a really good read and a second airing will do no harm.

At school now we are only allowed to use insulated mugs with lids on if we move out of the staff room or are on playground duty. The school has got a supply of them, but the problem is that they always smell of coffee and I only drink black tea, which means my tea tastes awful. So I've been on the lookout for one of my own. I didn't want a boring silver one as all the school ones are like that. I had my mind set on a pink one, but I saw this one today in Asda and fell in love!

I thought that this bit of topiary was the perfect tree for a scrapbooker. Unfortunately, the price tag of £420 meant it stayed in the garden centre!

I love the contrast of colours here, the spring green of the fresh new leaves, and the dark green of the ivy behind.

Isn't it funny how subliminal auto-suggestion works. As I was leaving school today I walked into a classroom and all the children were eating oranges after a day trip out. The aroma was staggering! When I got home I just had to have one. Of course I had to take a photo of it first so I cut it open to look pretty. And then made a complete mess as I tried to peel and eat it!
